After all the rumours & waiting, Samsung has finally launched its new flagship, the Galaxy S5. Like its predecessor, Galaxy S4, the S5 is also armed with top notch headline grabbing features. The only difference here is, while most of the features of S4 proved to be gimmicks, the ones with S5 seem to come handier to the users. It’s more powerful & faster than its predecessor & also comes with a fingerprint scanner & water & dust resistant chassis. It’s undoubtedly the best phone we’ve seen so far in the Galaxy series, but can it be the best smart phone of the year? Well, all we’ll say on this is, read the review & you yourself decide that.
Build & Design:
The rumours said Galaxy S5 will have a metal body. Well, those were rumours & this is Samsung. The Korean tech giant is still in love with the poly-carbonate build, & thus, the Galaxy S5 is mostly made up of plastic. To be honest, the rumours really got our hopes high & we were hoping for a metal body. But, don’t get disappointed, Samsung has done something here to counterweigh this. Continuing our discussion about metal, the S5 is surrounded by metal. Instead of going with faux leather or shiny plastic back, Samsung has given S5 a dimpled, matte finished back which feels soft as velvet while holding & is beautiful to look at. The dotted pattern on the back has enhanced the look of the handset. Though it isn’t completely made up of metal (as we were expecting), Samsung hasn’t compromised with the premium look of the device. It gives you a premium, stylish & sturdy feel while holding the device. Despite of its 142x72.5x8.1 mm dimensions, it only weighs 145 gm & that’s another good aspect of its design. The Galaxy S5 is IP67 certified water & dust resistant but it has still got a removable back cover & that gives you the freedom to carry a spare battery if you might ever need it.
Samsung Galaxy S5 flaunts a 5.1” full HD Super Amoled display having maximum resolution 1080x1920p. Although pixel density has dropped from 441 ppi in S4 to 432 ppi here, but the display of Galaxy S5 is better than its predecessor. Whether you’re watching movies or reading some web pages, S5’s display will relish you. It’s a display which is big, bright, vibrant, sharp & crisp & has wide viewing angles & brilliant sunlight legibility. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is present for the protection of this beautiful display.
Remember the Touch ID of Apple iPhone 5S? The Galaxy S5 has got a fingerprint scanner too, situated on the home button. The difference here is, you’ve to swipe your finger over the scanner in S5 while you just simply have to put your finger on the Apple iPhone 5S’ scanner. With the Fingerprint Scanner of S5, you can unlock your phone or can protect your confidential documents in the Private Mode or can even make secure instant online payments via PayPal.
S Health App:
Samsung seems anxious for the good health of users of S5. That’s why it has emphasized so much over the fitness with its new flagship device. The Galaxy S5 comes with Samsung’s S Health app 3.0 which helps you keep track on your fitness. It keeps an eye over your work-out & diet. It has also got a heart rate sensor which is situated at the back just beneath the flash. Just keep your finger over the sensor for a few seconds & it’ll tell your pulse rate.
Galaxy S5 carries a 16 MP camera with LED flash on its back. The camera of S5 has got plenty of interesting tricks under its sleeves but the headline feature is its superfast auto focus. The camera focuses on the subject really fast. As said by Samsung, it can take a picture in just 0.3 seconds. There’s also Selective Focus which gives you the power to select the focus after clicking the picture. There are a few more cool features like Dual Shot, an advanced HDR, touch focus, simultaneous HD video & image recording. S5 can record 2160p videos at frame rate of 30fps & 1080p videos at much faster speed of 60 fps. The 2 MP front-facing camera can also record 1080p videos @30fps.
Galaxy S5 carries a Octa Core (1.9Ghz Quad+ 1.3Ghz Quad) Processor under its hood. An Adreno 330 chip is also placed there for processing graphics. This duo is supported by 2 GB RAM. Performance of S5 can give you an adrenaline rush. It’s lag free all the time, irrespective of whatever task you put in front of it. You won’t even see S5 taking mild hiccups. It has no problem handling any task, app or game you want to open. If you wish to see S5 struggling with any app or game, go start developing one. Internal memory of the device is 16/32 GB which can be further increased up to 128 GB with a micro SD card. The 2800 mAh battery can easily get you through a day. There’s also a Battery Booster mode that can make 10% of battery to last around a whole day. That’s another great thing with Galaxy S5; good move, Samsung.
For connectivity & data sharing, Galaxy S5 is armed with 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.0, NFC, IR & a micro USB v3.0 port. Now, what else can be done for even faster internet than 3G or Wi-Fi? Use 3G& Wi-Fi together, yes, that’s the trick Samsung has played here. The Download Booster uses 3G & Wi-Fi simultaneously for downloading large files (more than 30 MB) instantly. There’s also MIMO (Multiple-input-multiple-output) to accelerate your Wi-Fi connection with 2 internal antennas.
Samsung Galaxy S5 is an amazing device to have. It has got beautiful display, brilliant camera, potent processor, water & dust resistant chassis, finger print scanner, heart rate sensor & a handy download booster feature. Everything about the device is awesome & we didn’t find anything to whine about. It’ll surely be a huge success for Samsung.
