Samsung has probably put every possible thing that can be in a tablet (right now) & has come up with Samsung Galaxy Note Pro. It’s a gigantic tablet with 12.2 inch big screen, stylus functionality, premium specs & a number of useful software features. Targeting the premium business end of the market, Samsung claims this business oriented tablet to be a solution for all your office needs. Coming at such a high price, can Note Pro replace your portable computer? Let’s try to find an answer to this in our depth review.
Samsung Galaxy Note Pro is a beast. With the 12” screen, it measures 295.6x204x8 mm. It does feel hefty as it weighs 753 gm. It looks much like a bigger version of Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. Front of the tablet is covered with glass while the back has the same faux stitching. Placement of ports & buttons seem quite reasonable. Below the screen is the physical home button flanked by the capacitive keys. Power button, volume rocker & IR LED are situated at the left end of the top edge of the device. These buttons are easy to reach if you’re holding the phone in landscape mode. There isn’t any button or port on the bottom edge. The rear camera is situated at the centre of the back which also seems reasonable as your fingers won’t be on top of it while taking a picture. The S Pen stylus is tucked at the upper right hand edge.
We’ve now reached the defining feature of Note Pro which is its 12.2” display. It’s a good display with resolution 2560x1600p & 247 pixels per inch. Display is bright & vibrant but the viewing angles aren’t that wide we’ve seen in recent high end devices. Still, it’s a pretty impressive display. Watching videos on this big display is a delight; just make sure the videos are HD, otherwise, they’ll appear somewhat pixelated on this big screen. The big screen has also provided extra space to the keyboard. Thus, there isn’t really any problem typing on it as the keys are big enough even for those with big fingers. Another plus point of this big screen is it has enhanced the stylus functionality of the device.
Already discussed, the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro comes with Samsung’s integrated S Pen stylus. It allows you to directly write or draw on tablet’s display. In Note Pro, we’ve seen the best optimization of the S Pen by now. The big display of the tablet has perfectly paired off with the stylus & it deserves credits for the best realisation of the S pen we’ve seen till now. Pressing S Pen’s button while hovering near the screen, activates the Air Command menu.
Software & Performance:
The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro runs latest version of Android, Kitkat (v4.4) with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of it. This is our favourite version of TouchWiz so far. What’s new with Note Pro is the additional Magazine UX. It gives a little Windows touch to Android. For ease, it can be said a unification of Flipboard & Widgets. It’s an aggregator similar to Flipboard that brings your social life, recent/ common apps & news altogether. The quad-core Exynos 5 Octa CPU of the Note Pro has no rifts neither with UI nor while performing any task. It’s a powerful CPU. There’s also 3 GB RAM which is sufficient (at the minimum).
Multi-Window allows you to open different apps in 4 different windows at once. The 3 GB RAM helps this feature to run smoothly. Samsung’s Multi-tasking app is also there for carrying out multiple options simultaneously.
Battery & Connectivity:
For providing power to the device, there’s a 9500 mAh juice pack. Battery life of the device is decent despite of its big display. Note Pro wouldn’t disappoint you on connectivity front as well. It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.0 & a micro USB v3.0 for connectivity & data sharing. There’s also an IR port which enables the tablet to be used as a remote control.
The camera unit of Note Pro is quite rare for tablets. It is armed with 8MP rear camera & 2MP front-facing camera. There’s also an LED flash which isn’t much seen with tablet cameras. Picture quality is decent & it can also record 1080p videos at frame rate of 30 fps. There’re also plenty of shooting modes including HDR, Panorama, Beauty Face, Best Face, Best Photo & many more. The only problem while taking pictures with Note Pro is that you might feel awkward because of size of the tablet. If you’re cozy with taking pictures with a 12.2 inch device, the camera unit of Note Pro is better than most of the tablets available in the market.
Samsung has provided a number of free apps & features to attract the business section of the market. Remote PC allows you to transfer, open or edit data on your PC remotely with Note Pro. It also provides 6 month free trial to Cisco WebEx which allows you to have group chat with up to 8 people. You can also share screen between devices. Hancom Office wouldn’t let you miss MS Office even if you use Office Word, Excel or Power Point quite a lot. There are some more free handy apps & features.
Samsung Galaxy Note Pro is 1 of the most perfectly equipped tablets. It’s clearly targeting the business portion of the market. The only negative point with the device is its high price. But, if you can afford it & don’t want to carry your portable computer for office work, Note Pro is definitely 1 of the best options currently available in the market.
